#CareerTipTuesday - Selecting the BEST References to Land the Job

7/27/2021

Hiring is a time consuming and expensive process, and as a result, employers work very intentionally to ensure that new hires will not pose any unnecessary risk to the organization. References serve as one of the last opportunities for employers to identify any red flags and confirm that a candidate has been honest about their experience and skillset.
.
Before an offer is made, employers are likely to check in with a candidate's references. Therefore, who you select can help you reduce any concerns and land that job!
.
But how do you know who to select and how to ask?
.
Our Tip: Reduce Red Flags with Stellar References
Go Professional:
Opt for professional references over personal ones. This includes former or current coworkers, supervisors and mentors rather than friends or family.
.
Get Specific:
Select individuals who have witnessed the strengths and skills that are relevant to the roles for which you're applying. Providing your references with details about the position for which you are applying also helps them prepare to speak on your behalf!
.
Ask First:
Never assume that someone will serve as a reference for you! Always ask before providing any contact information to be sure they are willing and prepared.
.
Contact Info:
Contact information can change frequently. Always confirm that you have accurate contact information including their preferred email and phone number.
.
Be sure to include individuals with whom you have a positive relationship, including at least one supervisor. If you are still working while searching for alternate employment, you may not have informed your current team or supervisor. Typically employers are sensitive and understanding of this situation. However, including another reference from your current position can help to ease any concerns about performance. Be careful to select someone who is trustworthy and discrete as there is a risk that the word could get out.
.
As is the case with many things in life, gratitude can go a long way. Always thank your references for serving as such! You never know when you may need them again.
.
Remember, references can make or break your chances of receiving an offer. So only select folks who will advocate for you and your abilities.
