#CareerTipTuesday - Practice & Prepare your 30 Second Commercial

6/22/2021

It's time for another #CareerTipTuesday and this week we're focused on giving you the confidence to ace your "30 Second Commercial" with some practice & preparation!
.
Employers often being interviews with the prompt: "Tell me about yourself." You know it's coming, but you may not know how to answer.
.
Our Tip: Practice & Prepare your 30 Second Commercial...or what some folks call your "elevator pitch". This is essentially an overview of who you are as a professional & serves as an opportunity to make a strong first impression!
.
It will be useful in interviews, at career fairs & while networking. Be CONFIDENT, ENTHUSIASTIC & PROFESSIONAL. Your answer should be practiced, but should not sound memorized. Test it out in a mirror or with friends so that you're not robotic!
.
But what should you include in your answer?
.
Experience: What qualifications do you have for the role? What is your background? Your education? What are your strengths & interests that relate to this position?
.
Skills: What hard & soft skills do you possess relevant to this position? Remember: Hard skills are those technical skills related to the content of the job. Examples may include computer skills, data entry, etc. Soft skills are less technical & often apply to many different positions/work places. They may include communication skills, interpersonal skills, etc.
.
Accomplishments: What work-related accomplishments benefitted your previous employer? If they may benefit this potential employer, they will likely want to know!
.
Goals: What are you looking for now & in the future? How does this position fit into those long-term goals?
.
Remember: Employers are looking for someone who is going to stick around & be of benefit to the organization long-term. Therefore, no matter what the question, reassure the employer that you are the right person for the job by making your answers relevant & specific to the position & organization.
